Election Week Operating Rules for South Africans Paying Home from Abroad

Election Week
Hey South Africans abroad,

4 November is nine days away. From here to the vote, treat the South African account as an operations desk, not a dealing desk.

If you fund bonds, levies, medical aid, school fees or family support from the UK, Australia, Dubai or the USA, these are the rules for the final stretch. They are not a campaign recap.

Rule 1 — Clear only what already has a date

If a debit, invoice or wage has a date between now and mid-November, make sure the balance covers it. That includes the bond, levies, medical aid, a school clearance, parent support on its usual day, a policy collection, and any contract you already own.

If it does not have a date and an amount, it waits.

Rule 2 — Do not open new household decisions

Until you have seen the result and the first week of reaction:
  • no new property purchase or panic listing
  • no new standing order or rewritten sibling split
  • no large “just in case” conversion
  • no change to which account pays the main debits
Freeze was the instruction at three weeks. It still is.

Rule 3 — The float stays the float

If you already hold about two months of hard costs in the SA account, leave it there. Do not raid it for an unlabelled extra. Do not double it because a chat got loud.

A thin float is the only reason to send money this week, and only by the shortfall.

Rule 4 — The view goes to a market

If you think the Rand gets noisier into and after 4 November, that view belongs on Polymarket.co.za.It does not belong in the account that pays Discovery, the body corporate or a parent’s groceries.

Rule 5 — Test access once, then stop refreshing

Log in once this week from the device you actually use. Confirm OTPs still arrive. Then stop opening the app every time a headline lands.

UK and Dubai can usually fix a real shortfall the same South African business day. Australia should not leave a Friday debit to a Monday login.

Rule 6 — One reply for the noisy chat

If someone asks you to “send extra because of the election,” reply:“Send the invoice or the debit date. I’m not changing the standing amount this week.”Then leave the thread. The debate is not a transfer instruction.

Final word

Local sites will stay loud until 4 November. Your job from abroad is narrower: clear dated payments, leave the float alone, freeze new decisions, and put any market view on Polymarket.co.za.
